This is a feminist black comedy of the traps that lie ahead of us. A very black comedy by the “Margaret Thatcher”, Vera Chytilova. When her car breaks down, a young woman accepts a lift from two men. The episode turns into rape. To get her revenge, the woman who is a vet, castrates the men. When they in turn decide to get even, all three characters suddenly find themselves in traps. The biggest trap in the movie is the life itself with its instinct of self-preservation, compelling us to continuously re-invent ourselves. The other traps are the love, the inhuman nature of the being and the pride. There are more traps along the path of our lives, such as the desire to capture the world, to win, to acquire power, to rule and to posses, even if that means using violence. It is also story about how just one single event can turn our lives upside down. The story is regarded elsewhere as a cruel depiction of post-communist Czech society. |
