Introduction
For centuries Taiwan has been familiar to the world as Formosa derived from the Portuguese "Ilha Formosa" – meaning beautiful island. Over its history, Taiwan has become a melting pot of people, including the aborigines, Han and Hakka people who have shaped Taiwan's rich and varied culture. In recent decades, a group of the“New Immigrants”has been drawn to Taiwan by the prospect of a brighter future - foreign brides from China, Vietnam, Indonesia, and other countries in Asia. Many of them face such challenges as language barriers and cultural differences but remain alienated from the society at large. Before they can set down their roots firmly in this beautiful island, the brides have to travel a long journey on which they meet a myriad challenges and hurdles before the social stigma attached to foreign brides can even be confronted. It seems that it could cost them a lot more than they expected to leave home and to look for a better life in Formosa.
