2012 Women Make Waves Film Festival CALL FOR ENTRY

Women Make Waves Film Festival aims to celebrate the achievements of outstanding female talents, to explore different aspects of women's lives as well as to promote equality and rights of all genders. By covering a wide range of genres, issues, and representations of women, the Festival seeks to present and honor women’s survival wisdom and power as they are turned into films and gain mainstream recognition.

Time & Place

The 19th Women Make Waves Film Festival, organized by the non-profit Taiwan Women’s Film Association, will be held in Taipei in October, 2012. A portion of the selected films will be invited on a nationwide tour shortly after the screenings in Taipei city.

Entry qualification

Submission to the festival is open to feature films, short films, documentaries, animation, experimental films and innovative visual productions for digital media. There is no entry fee to submit films to Women Make Wave Film Festival. We welcome any recent works (produced up to 2 years before the Festival) by a female director that has not been shown in other festivals in Taiwan. Films that address women-related issues and/or have innovative visual style are preferable.

Deadline for entry: May 10, 2012

We have four main subjects in 2012 WMWFF:

1.      Queer Flame: LGBT, FTM, MTF, Questioning, Fluxion and Intersex films are all welcome.  We are looking for films that portray the daily lives and struggles of the modern queer culture, unique individuals in the communities, and stories that need to be shared with the world.

2.      Women in the Workforce:  As women's rights movement has spread around the world, more women are finding themselves in the working world that was once dominated by men. What is the state of women in the workplace?  How are they juggling between the roles of working females, mothers, and wives? What kind of unusual jobs are they working at?  Stories from all social classes are welcomed.

3.      Women and Desire: Women have been conditioned to accept images and to define themselves through reflections from others. But what do women really want?  What kind of discriminations and dangers do they face? In this section, we are looking for films that discuss the complex world of sexual, relational, material and spiritual desire.

4.      New Currents: We are looking for cutting-edge, daring films by new and upcoming female directors that are innovative in cinematic styles and forms.  These films need to explore the aesthetic possibilities of the cinematic medium, and can draw on influences from all types of art forms and cultures.

We particularly welcome films made by female directors of Chinese decent.
