Introduction
A broken heart, a dysfunctional family, a bittersweet journey. Yunings Return chronicles the life of a female migrant worker as she struggles to support her disintegrating family. Yuning, a 26-year-old Indonesian woman with an unemployed husband and a five-year-old son, was determined to give her family a better life when she went to Taiwan two years earlier. She worked as a domestic worker in Taipei and sent all her money back home. The hard work and her determination to succeed, however, did not promise a brighter future. Responding to the family’s urge for her to go home, Yuning ends her contract three months earlier, and returns to Indonesia, where heartbreaking truths wait ahead in her family. In following the heroine’s personal adventure, the film highlights the
feminization of labor migration in Asia and explores the potential dilemmas faced by those female laborers and their families behind this ongoing trend.
